Full body massage can be employed as soon as the new mother came home. However, for a mother who had undergone the caesarian section, it would take longer time until the wound heals. Since a cesarean is a major surgery, the mother may feel a lot of pain. This means it’s important to recover first after undergoing a surgery. A mother should wait until she recovers before she can start receiving the massage. It is strongly suggest the massage start after 3 to 5 weeks after the doctor has confirmed whether the mother is ready. As long the massage stays away from the scar or the abdomen they will help the mother recover fast after around 5 weeks.
However, before embarking on this, a new mother needs to arrange for some help since she will be staying for more than an hour with the newborn and this can be quite challenging. It will be better if your confinement nanny, babysitter or your baby’s grandmother can watch over the baby.
On the other hand, this particular massage should not be given to mum if there are skin problems like blisters, rashes, eczema and boils as well as hernia. Lighter massage is recommended if a new mother has a history of hypertension.

What are the benefits for post natal massage?
|
- Post natal massage also supports and relaxes the mother. This means that the mother gets the opportunity to relax in between the rigors of baby care that come with giving birth. A relaxed mother means a relaxed bay. This will reduce anxiety, boost the energy levels and minimize the feelings that might come due to stress.
- If a mother delivers through caesarean section, this special massage can also help speed up the recovery period that comes with this. Although the mother should steer clear of the wound as long as it has not healed, gentle massage of the area around the wound will increase blood supply and assist with the internal healing of the body.
- The stroking and kneading action can help in toning and tightening the stretched muscles, especially the tummy and also helps mothers to get back to their pre-pregnancy shape.
- It helps your body to release endorphins, which acts as pain killers.
- Reducing spasms, cramps and aches. It can also reduce the risk of developing postpartum depression. Massage is a good mood enhancer and stress buster.
